If you’ve been following me over the past few weeks, you’ll know that I’ve been writing extensively about innovation, design thinking, and social entrepreneurship. Recently, someone asked me how I became an impact entrepreneur, and my response was simple: I’ve always cared about making an impact, and I’ve always loved innovating. My mind is constantly bursting with ideas, so I combined the two passions.
This isn’t a new story for me, and I thought it would be great to revisit it through my recent interview with Exquisite Magazine.
The Unexpected Email
It all started with an email from Exquisite Magazine, reaching out to feature me in their publication. Initially, I was skeptical, but their impressive Instagram presence caught my attention. With tens of thousands of followers and a strong online presence, I decided to respond. My assistant handled the correspondence, and I took the time to articulate my thoughts and answers to their questions.
Documenting My Journey
Writing my story was a therapeutic experience, allowing me to reflect on my values, wisdom, and experiences. As the founder of I-Train Africa and the Skilled For Work Academy, I’ve had the privilege of shaping young minds and empowering them with 21st-century skills. My feature in Exquisite Magazine is more than just a story – it’s a testament to the power of innovation, social entrepreneurship, and the impact one person can have.
From Timid Child to Powerhouse
Growing up, I was a timid child, but my dad’s unwavering support and guidance transformed me into a confident individual. He instilled in me the values of resilience, hard work, and determination. His influence has been instrumental in shaping my journey into social entrepreneurship. In the feature, I shared how my dad’s parenting style helped me overcome my fears and develop the confidence to pursue my passions.
Failing Fast and Forward
As an innovator and social entrepreneur, I’ve learned the importance of embracing failure as a stepping stone to success. The concept of “failing fast and failing forward” has been instrumental in my journey. I learned this approach during an innovation program at Robert Gordon University in 2018, where I studied entrepreneurship, innovation, and skills. This mindset has allowed me to take calculated risks, experiment, and iterate – essential skills for any entrepreneur.
The Power of Innovation and Design Thinking
My background in innovation and design thinking has been crucial in shaping my approach to social entrepreneurship. The UNLEASH program in Singapore in 2018 further honed my skills in innovation, enabling me to develop solutions that address real-world problems. Starting the Skilled For Work Academy would have been more daunting without this solid foundation.
Balancing Work and Family Life
One of the most significant challenges I face as a social entrepreneur is balancing my work and family life. In the feature, I shared my strategies for maintaining this delicate balance. Prioritizing my time, setting boundaries, and being present in the moment have helped me navigate these challenges.
A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs
To anyone looking to embark on a similar journey, I would say this: don’t be afraid to take the leap. Embrace failure as a learning opportunity, and never stop innovating. Surround yourself with people who support and believe in you, and always keep your purpose at the forefront of everything you do.
